there are pros and cons to both, of course. i'm curious what you use and why? any words of wisdom? :>

[Interest Check] What would you look for in an "RPG Actions" plugin?

Hi! One of my slow background projects is what I'm coming to name an "RPG Actions" plugin.

What this will boil down to is when a user posts, they have a choice of choosing from one or multiple "actions" to associate with that post, and fields to go along with them for supplementing additional data. Each action will modify or do something based on what is selected / entered.

Examples:

A user posts and selects a skill, and EXP increments a certain amount for that skill.

A user posts with a certain action and their currency is incremented a certain amount

A user posts with a certain action and a NewPoints item is either removed from or added to their inventory.

A user posts with a certain action and a post is made in a forum elsewhere.

I wanted to see what everyone else would be interested in seeing in a plugin like this. I plan on creating certain "action sets" that perform certain tasks. Incrementing a field, adding data to the end of a field, interacting with NewPoints, etc. What are everyone's use cases and desires for something like this?

Some disclaimers:

No ETA for this plugin, knowing my record it might not ever be finished!

Just an interest check, no guarantee that requested features will be present in it.

Would anyone be interested in a RPG about Bears? It would be set in a large protected forest area, ingame perks/awards/events, fully customizable designs and adoptables. Minor storyline to help organic sandbox like interactions. Writing would be 100 word minimum or the character owners can make artwork of their OC doing actions (think ARPG/RPG). Would be set in an alternate universe where members could design their characters with freedom or if they want completely natural looking characters. Familiar guides from the Spirit realm would be put into play either as Staff NPCs or Events.

Hey all,

I'd like to get your perspective on a sometimes polarizing topic as I work on developing a fantasy RPG after a seven-year hiatus. I'm torn between using face claims or original art to represent characters, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Original Characters:
Before my hiatus, I was all about original characters with unique designs and artwork. However, I've noticed that this approach can unintentionally create barriers. The communities tended to become art-centric, favoring characters with "expensive" art for plots or important roles over others with "cheap" art (or no art at all). Is this a common experience, or is this culture more unique to the communities I had been involved in?

On the positive side, I think original art can make the world more engaging and allows for a broader range of possibilities. I'm also considering AI art to make it more accessible, but I'm very uncertain if that is a morally sound choice with the concerns of how it's impacting actual artists.

Face Claims:
I had initially decided on face claims for their simplicity, affordability, and vast options. However, I'm concerned about breaking immersion. Seeing the face of a known entertainer in a completely imaginary world might disrupt the fantasy, especially if the entertainer's public personality doesn't match the character they're representing.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Do you lean towards OC, and if so, do you have any recommendations for avoiding the potential "art-centric" focus? Or do you prefer FC for their simplicity and accessibility?

Thanks for any and all input!

I’m in a pickle. I want to upgrade to Simple Machines Forums 2.1, but I would lose many essential mods from 2.0 (subaccounts, templates, etc). Thus, I am looking for other options.

So far, I have been considering MyBB and Xenforo. Since this forum is based on MyBB, there may be some bias, but I don’t necessarily mind.
What does everyone think about each platform?

I wanted to use this thread to discuss and gather info about a potential "HP plugin". I may be able to produce this, or if there are enough interested people we could club together to commission something. So, a few things:

1) State your interest: would you use this plugin?
2) Would you be able to contribute (at least $15) towards an external commission?
3) In your ideal world, what would be the perfect version of this plugin for your site and its mechanics?
4) Bearing in mind we'd need to come up with a shared idea that will work for all sites, do you have any ideas for a versatile plugin? Please comment on any other suggestions that have already been made.

Version 1
The most basic implementation of this plugin: on each post the user submits, they have the option to enter current HP and max HP. These would then be displayed on the postbit, and this could be customised in the template. (Can be achieved currently with myCode but it's nicer as a form)

Version 2
Like version 1, but each character has a stored "running total" of their HP, stored in a SQL table somewhere, per thread. A profile field would be used to store their "max HP", which would be their health at the start of the thread. Each time they post, they can enter an amount for "damage taken", and it will automatically calculate their new HP and display it on their post.
This would also need some kind of admin override in case the user messes up, or the ability to edit it when editing their post, and I'm unsure how best to implement this. (Also, the ability to heal/add HP in general - perhaps that could cover the "I messed up" case as well, since then it's transparent that they have altered it.)

Version 3
Much more customisable. As someone in Discord put it, "like xthreads, but for posts instead of threads". You could define any number of additional fields as part of the Reply "form", and display those fields in your postbit as you wish. This wouldn't do things like calculations though, it'd be more like Version 1 but with as many things as you like (e.g. on our site we could use it to also display Prey health when hunting).

I'm not social in the mybb rp community outside this group, but I'm pretty sure the vast majority use that plugin so including it by default seems a good idea to me.
I personally like the option to have news and recent posts to scroll, because I like to leave past news there for reference, and I love to have a 900 mile long recent threads, because sometimes shit gets wild and if it's too short, many new updates can get pushed off. But making a box scroll is usually a pretty easy switch to make happen. Maybe even some code note in the template with just a quick note on how to make a standard box scroll?
I'm.nkt much of one for images, so I prefer text, but I think I'm in the general minority on that? Doesn't bother me though. Probably easier to not use an image than to try and figure out how to put one in if there is none by default?
I like a larger avatar, I think my sites use 250x400 or similar, so I generally use the sidebar for mini profiles. That said,I think the top line info can look amazing.
I would probably be happy with minimal repsponse by default; like the sire functions in pc view on mobile. I'm not a fan of the really compact and in your face mobile sites...

Also another general question:
Do people like rounded borders or straight-edge squares e.g. for a forum row? Do you like the bubble kinda look or just straight rectangles all the way?

What shape? e.g. squares, wide rectangles (one per row), or tall rectangles? Do the subforums need to display on the main page or could you live with it being click-through?

Postbit - minimum info? What info would you want included to start with? Do you prefer a side bar mini-profile or one that goes along the top? What size avatar would you want to start with?

And finally (for now) - Mobile responsiveness - would a non-responsive theme be a dealbreaker? Or if there was a mobile/responsive version for an extra (say) $15-20 dollars, would you consider buying it, even if you only planned to use it short term?

What would put you off using a theme?

Also another general question:
Do people like rounded borders or straight-edge squares e.g. for a forum row? Do you like the bubble kinda look or just straight rectangles all the way?

My site when viewed on mobile is the same, but some sites, like rpg-d for example, have a mobile view that makes me feel claustrophobic lol. I included some screenshots to hopefully illustrate my point. Let me know if I'm not clear >.<
What should I replace the board name with for SFW theme? It will be a rather generic theme with very limited imagery..

Instead of "MyRPG" what do you suggest?

Hullo ya'll,

I'm currently playing around, learning the ins and outs of MyBB themes. I was wondering if anyone had any absolute favourite themes or any examples of particular things they like/dislike on themes? I'm obviously looking specifically at RPG sites or themes for RPG sites.

Things I personally look for on any site:
- legibility i.e not teeny tiny fonts and decent contrast on the colours
- responsivity i.e I can still comfortably use the site on my mobile

Okay, so I've been doing RP forums for a long-ass time. I've observed some patterns for when you get a surge of new members and new faces and even when the site slows down, and people get busy. But I've always wondered, is this universally true, or do I just happen to be in places where it seems to be true? Is there a broader pattern to it?

So, through my observations, I notice that there's a definite jump right before Christmas and often around Christmas, dipping low at the end of January and the start of February, with summer (June-August) being a pretty dead period. Then there's a little surge in September-October again, and the cycle starts anew.

Is this a pattern anyone else has recognised, or have you guys noticed different times for jumps or dips in activity? Like, is there an RP high season, or is it just a constant trickle?

I remember when there was a time that shops weren't a thing, that we were allowed to just make characters how we wanted from the get go.

There was a point in the horse rpg niche many years ago that you had to buy every item that wasn't natural to make your character be a certain color, have a horn, wings, etc., and I hated it.

So for funsies and data, what do you like?

For the admin side, it can be difficult to govern what to put in it (I decided to do away with a shop since in my rpg, it was pretty useless since exploration was more focused.)
For the player side, it can be either an annoyance or you like it to work towards something.

Tell me your reasons though on why you voted yay or nay since I love to hear different viewpoints

What made you pick myBB?

So I've jumped around on a lot of forum types, mostly the free hosted ones. ProBoards, InvisionFree, ZetaBoards, Jcink, and Tapatalk by accident when they sucked up IF. I've found they worked for what I needed at the time but always felt limited in a few ways, particularly with coding and what I could make the code do. Both limitations with what the forum software would let me do and my own coding abilities.

Picking up myBB has been a bit of an adventure. I'm still not all that confident poking around on the back-end, but the things my coding partner has been able to do with myBB that we couldn't figure out how to work out on others have really enhanced our user experience with RPing. Threadlogs are a revelation and I find it difficult to exist without them now. We've been figuring things out as we go along, testing and tweaking for over a year now until we hit a spot where we're happy where we are, but still looking to tweak some things (like being able to put thread descriptions on threads in the threadlogs, and reordering them).

To answer my own question, myBB was the one forum software we were passingly familiar with, had seen in use, and wanted similar capabilities. I've come to love it so much that using other forum types makes me feel like I'm missing something, but at the same time, there's some stuff we haven't figured out that we wished we had (like being able to set the post author without logging in/out, like you can do on Jcink).

What about you guys? If you used others, when did you switch and why? Or did you dive head first into myBB from the very beginning?
