When AIVAS was discovered, it was a new dawn for Pern. Thread vanished, and with it the need for dragons and riders to lay their lives down to defend Pern. Progress was made, and technology developed. It’s amazing what a little electricity and hot water could do for a population.
Beneath the revelry and academic progress, no one noticed the rot.
Splinter groups believed that dragons were no longer a necessary evil, and held the belief that they should be left to die out. They believed Pern should no longer have to bear burden of dragonkin.
But dragons and impression, pernese tradition, run deep. Dragons could not be waved away from the world. They found their place again—working alongside of their riders. Though there were many who embraced this change, there were some that found it unacceptable. They said nothing, and let that darkness fester.
In the year 101 PA, this group finally decided to reveal themselves. The Wingless struck at a hatching at Telgar Weyrhold, killing several and injuring more. They were behind the poisoning of dragonkin, thwarted only by the combined efforts of several of the Weyrhold’s harpers and healers. They would strike again, and again, kidnapping candidates and maiming the dragonkin. A successful rescue let Telgar, and all of Pern, learn that they had an enemy lurking in the darkness.
